Ordeing sushi grade fish is easier than ever

Since the COVID pandemic shut down in March 2020, many businesses have pivoted. My company Breakthrough Sushi is one of them. We have been offering in-person sushi classes, but during the lockdown, our business came to a sudden halt. There was no business between March to July 2020, which threatened the future of the business.

The solution came when one of my business collage told me about a local fish company, Four Star Seafood selling “Sushi Kit.” It had fresh fish and dry goods like rice and nori - everything one need to make sushi. Since then, Breakthrough Sushi has been offering online sushi classes, thanks to two of the vendors, Four Star Seafood in San Francisco and Yama Seafood in New Jersey, sending over a thousand kits all across the United States.

It was a challenge. But when I met (online) folks from Utah and Georgia, who received the fresh fish in the kit, I saw them being ecstatic. If there was one positive thing that came out of this COVID, for me, it was an opportunity to meet those folks across the US whom I’d have never met otherwise.

And then, the “pivot” took place in the entire wholesale fish industry (so I heard.) Before the Pandemic, it was taboo for the wholesaler to sell fish to consumers, because it meant they would be competing with their customers, namely supermarkets and other retailers. But the Pandemic gave everyone a “go” because otherwise, the wholesalers couldn’t make up for the losses that came from many restaurants shutting down and going out of business.

This is one of the reasons why now, there are many wholesale fish companies across the United States selling fish online directly to consumers.
