How to Make Corporate Team Building Meaningful and Effective

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

In any work environment, it’s important that your employees get along and trust each other. You want them to operate as a cohesive unit so that they can each produce the best work possible. If you’re worried that your employees aren’t gelling as a team, then you may want to consider team building exercises. Team building exercises help to break the ice between employees since they get them working together and having fun at the same time. However, there are some things to keep in mind and some things to avoid. If you want to host the best corporate team building exercise that you can, follow these tips!

Make it Inclusive

An important thing to remember when planning a team building exercise is to make sure it is inclusive to all of your employees. After all, the best corporate team building exercises are the ones that do as the name suggests: build the entire team into something stronger and more effective than it was before. If someone feels left out or forgotten, then the full team cannot hope to be made stronger.

Even if you’ve planned the best corporate team building exercise ever, it will only accomplish a portion of its goal if some members of your staff are excluded. So make sure that the activity you plan is one that everyone can attend, and also that you clearly invite everyone.

Make it Optional

Again, even if you’ve planned the best corporate team building activity ever, it is possible that certain members of the staff will not be able to attend. So, make the event optional and encourage your employees to try to make it. If they can’t, let them know that there will be more events in the future. The last thing you want to do is make the exercise mandatory. This will only lead to resentment from the employees who may need to find a babysitter, for example, and a general lack of enthusiasm from the rest of the staff. If your employees feel that they are being forced to attend the event, they will be significantly less excited about it.

Choose the Right Time

As a rule of thumb, it’s probably best not to host the event at a particularly busy time. If your employees are busy at work on a lengthy and difficult project, the last thing they want is to be interrupted by a team building exercise. The best corporate team building exercises are the ones that do not get in the way of people’s work. A great way to do this is to put out a survey for your employees, asking them when they are available. You can even ask them what kind of event they’d like in the survey as well! By doing so, you guarantee that as many employees as possible can attend the event. Furthermore, they will appreciate the fact that you considered their schedules and will be, therefore, more willing to participate in the exercise.
