Is My Sushi Safe to Eat?

Recently, many class attendees asked me about the safety of fish we serve during our team building sushi class, specifically radiation from Fukushima nuclear plant that was damaged by the tsunami. The answer is, in US, there is no danger of radiation in the fish we eat at sushi restaurants. The facts are:

  • No fish caught near the Fukushima plant is exported to US.

  • Some of the tunas, including pacific albacore that migrate to the coast of Japan will be contaminated to radiation. However, by the time they reach back to the pacific coast, the level of contamination drops significantly through natural radioactive decay, thus making it safe for consumption.
